Sundays, June 14, 21, 28 — Mission Offering
June’s mission offering will support our youth team going to Oklahoma for a mission trip of leading a vacation church school with indigenous children and experiencing eco-spirituality. There are eight people going. There are two ways to support the venture:

  • Sponsor one of the persons going — $100 or any amount, more or less
  • Become a prayer partner for a person going. Let Dana Jones know you want to be a prayer partner and she will match you up with a person-in- mission

Tuesdays @ Dorry's is coordinated by Dorry's friends at Memorial United Methodist Church, Congregation Kol Ami and the White Plains Times.

Rainbow Vespers -- June 18
Memorial offers a Rainbow Vespers service on the third Thursday of each month. The next Rainbow Vespers is June 18.This service is designed as a welcoming "portal" for the LGBT persons and their friends and allies. Everyone in the congregation is invited. Bring family and friends. The leader of Rainbow Vespers is Rev. Sara Thompson Tweedy, a United Methodist pastor of the New York Annual Conference. The service starts at 6:30 p.m. and is completed by 7:30 p.m. so folks can attend the third-Thursday movies presented by the LOFT. Many MUMC people have been attending Rainbow Vespers and find the time spiritually centering and renewing. Rev. Thompson Tweedy is an insightful and creative preacher.

June 17 to 23 —Pastor Joe singing in Germany
Pastor Joe is singing with 13 members of the Walkabout Clearwater Chorus in Dortmund, Germany at the Pressefest concert. As many as 70,000 persons attend this festival. Jenny Murphy, our children’s choir director is also part of the group.

PRIDE SUNDAY - JUNE 28
Memorial will be celebrating Gay Pride Sunday on June 28th at worship that morning and by joining other communities of faith to march in the NYC Pride Parade that afternoon.- Mark your calendars and plan to join us in this festive, affirming event! We would like to have a large contingent from MUMC--including our youth. When else will you have the opportunity to march down Fifth Avenue, celebrating God's diverse creation and being welcomed by cheering, exuberant crowds? - For further information, contact Helen Andrew.

“Sexuality is God’s good gift to all persons. We believe persons may be fully human only when that gift is acknowledged and affirmed by themselves, the church, and society.”
--United Methodist Book of Discipline, ¶161G)

Gay Pride Sunday

June 28, 2009

Meet 1pm, 53rd St. btw. Fifth Ave. & Madison

  • Start with Pride Sunday worship at any of these reconciling churches: PSUMC Brooklyn, Church of the Village Manhattan, SPSA Manhattan, Memorial White Plains

  • Then join us at the annual Gay Pride March in Manhattan in the afternoon. Our official line-up time is 1pm, 53rd btw. Fifth and Madison Aves.

Gay Pride Sunday – the last Sunday in June, commemorating the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in 1969 that sparked the modern gay rights movement – is celebrated every year the world over by LGBT people. It is our chance to take pride in who we are, in what we have accomplished in our fight for equal rights, and to rejuvenate and rededicate ourselves to the struggle to end prejudice and discrimination against queer people.

As United Methodists, we have a special obligation to show the world on Pride Sunday that our denomination’s bigoted doctrine and policy do not speak for us.

We will be part of a religious contingent of over 1,000 people joining the half million-strong annual Gay Pride March. We will share communion, and we will share the Good News with the crowds that the Kingdom of God welcomes all and that sexuality is indeed God’s good gift to everyone.

Bring food and water and sunscreen and wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes. We will have a support vehicle for those unable to walk the entire route.

Sunday, June 28: Rainbow Sunday
Sending Forth Rev. Steve Goldstein to Pastor in Wilton, Connecticut
Special Rainbow Pride Worship with Rev. Sara Thompson Tweedy preaching. Many will travel to NYC for Pride March, leaving right after worship.

July 12-22, Youth Mission Trip to Oklahoma
Come to the church at 6 a.m. on Sunday, July 12 to send off our mission team: Joe Agne, Olivia Bauer, Kiara Bunting, Dana Jones, Raffi Levy, Matt Lewis, Katie Strohmayer, Maddie Strohmayer, Heather Ungerer. They will go on a road trip to Oklahoma and back, staying in church basements. While in Clinton, Oklahoma they will help lead a vacation church school in a Native American church where all the members are children and youth. Then they head for a 3-day eco-spirituality event before heading home.
