Pastor's Paragraphs -- Joe Agne

This Sunday, I am going with the Youth Group to see the movie, Avatar. On the first Sunday of February, February 7, I will preach in response to the movie. It will also be the subject of the Engage discussion after worship.  So -- go see it if you haven't. Join us as we engage with the movie and its meanings.
The focus scripture for this coming Sunday, January 31, is Luke 4:21-30. We are continuing the story of Jesus declaring the mission of his life. His childhood congregation likes the idea of his fulfilling Isaiah 61-- but, when he tells them the specifics of his calling and how it is congruent with what they taught him as a youngster, they become angry with him and try to end his life. The sermon title is, "Be careful what we teach our kids -- they might believe it." John Baitsell will preach at the 8:30 a.m. service and I will lead communion.
We continue to pray for the people of Haiti -- the losses of so many people. Janine Bysticky, Marie Laguerre Lewis and Mirielle St. Armand all report their families are safe. Marie's mom is home -- Prayers of joy and concern.

Last Saturday evening, we provided lodging and a snack for 26 persons without homes. Thanks to John Baitsell and Dick Stone for setting up beds and providing food. Let me know if you want to help next time.
We have some other "journey outward" needs. Contact me or the church office if you can help:
1."I will count the offering on Sunday mornings." Right after church we will be counting the offering of the morning and preparing it for the bank and the needed reports. You can do one Sunday a month or do it every Sunday. We will work in teams of three persons.
2. "I will help stock the Memorial Thrift Shop shelves." Talk to Joan Meehan.
3. "I will host a "Dinner for 7" on the first weekend on March (either in my home or at the church). Talk to Joan Meehan or Darlene DiDomineck.
4. "I can provide rides to the Ash Wednesday Service," leaving the church at 6:30 p.m.
See you this Sunday.
Peace, Salaam, Shalom!
  Joe Agne

January 26 : Oliver Swift, Coordinator, Group 42, Amnesty International USA
Oliver Swift coordinates the local chapter of Amnesty International. He will provide some background on this international organization, which we’ve all heard of but about which we may not know a great deal. He’ll tell us how it got started, how it's organized, how it operates, and some examples of its successes. He will also let us know what local Group 42 has been doing, and will fill us in on some current Amnesty campaigns.

February 2 : Nick Wolff
Nick Wolff has lived in White Plains for all of his 59 years. He has been deeply involved in the life of the city through his work in real estate and his many community involvements. Many of us first knew him when he ran Century 21 Wolff; now he’s a Broker Associate with Better Homes and Gardens/Rand Realty; a board member of several organizations, including the White Plains Library Foundation, Friends of Public Education for the White Plains Schools, Westhab, and Family Services of Westchester; Commissioner of the White Plains Housing Authority; and chair of the scholarship committee of White Plains Rotary. Nick will talk with us about the changes he’s seen and what has been most important to him in the life of this economically and racially diverse city.

Tuesdays @
Dorry's gathers "conversation partners" weekly for informal table talk. There is no charge. Order food at 5:30 p.m., and then enjoy a stimulating program from 6-7 p.m.
Tuesdays @ Dorry's is coordinated by Dorry's friends at Memorial United Methodist Church, Congregation Kol Ami and the White Plains Times.

SANCTUARY
Every third Thursday of the month, 6:30pm
Led by Rev. Sara Thompson Tweedy
Music led by Rev. Eric Jennings
Sanctuary is a spiritual gathering devoted to and expressly for the LGBTQ community and their supporters. Because this community struggles for inclusion, we have created a safe space for all persons to worship, question, and trust their own inner wisdom. In a contemplative atmosphere that draws on the teachings of many spiritual traditions, we learn to trust what we believe and give our innermost thoughts and feelings an opportunity to rise from within us. - Join us for an hour of reflection, worship, and fellowship where we can all be who God created us to be.

Directions to Memorial UMC are at http://memorial4all.org/aboutus/contactus

Join us after the service (7:30pm) for movie night at the LOFT, Westchester’s LGBT community center, housed right at Memorial.

This flyer produced by Methodists in New Directions (MIND). MIND is a conference-wide organization of United Methodists working to end our denomination’s doctrinal prejudice and institutional discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and committed to living more fully into God’s radical Welcome right now and right here.

Support Memorial's "250" neighbors
Three organizations are based at Memorial, 250 Bryant Avenue:

Thank You for Christmas Gifts !
From Memorial's Outreach Journey Group: Thank you all for the generous response to the Outreach for Christmas gifts. The residents of Anchor House (Our residential drug rehab facility in Brooklyn) again this year received individual gift packages of toiletry items (50 men and 20 women) as has been  our custom for many years.  This year an added gift was the inclusion of a hand knitted scarf, provided by members and friends of MUMC.  Richard Rice delivered these at the Christmas Eve day service there and reports how pleased the residents were -- they immediately tried them on!  (Thanks to the knitters.)  -  Grace Church men's shelter also received approximately 40 gifts from our congregation of sweat shirts, tee shirts, socks, gloves, etc.  Sister Alice has written a thank you note to us.  -  The Children's Home in Binghamton very much appreciated the $700 gift and will use it for the good work going on there. I do not have a report on the Christmas Tree sales at this point. Thank you to everyone who participated in one way or another. - Nancy Rice -

Keep Knitting
The scarves for Anchor House were a big hit and so we want YOU to keep right on knitting, and if you didn't knit (or crochet) in 2009, you can start right now.  The scarves should be 6 to 10 inches wide and about 50 inches long -- we need 50 for men, 20 for women -- and need to be washable.  Call Kathleen Cotter or Nancy Rice for info and look for notice of a time in the spring when we can all meet together. - Special thanks to the following for their contributions this year:  Kathleen Cotter, Maryanne Wolf, Pat Hayes, Joan Morgan, Cynthia Plater, Phyllis Rodriguez and Nancy Rice.  And, anyone else I may have missed. - Nancy Rice
