Picnic for the "Beloved Community"

Dear folks,
I am not sure if any of you have heard about the United Methodist minister, and good friend of mine, Josh Noblitt who was attacked over July 4th weekend when he was having a picnic with his partner at a park in Atlanta. The story is quite dramatic, as they were approached and asked if they were gay by the assailants, and then without even responding were told that they deserved to be beat for that.

I really cannot summarize the situation or Josh's beautiful response myself and can only ask that you read about it on the RMN website, or on MIND's website, or even here on Josh's own blog.

The response that Josh has made is quite lovely and in his effort to seek for the Beloved Community that Martin Luther King spoke of, he wants to reclaim the park where he was attacked by having a picnic this weekend in the exact same spot with his extended beloved community in Atlanta. Other places have decided to have picnics as well, including D.C. and Chicago both, and we here in New York are dedicating our annual summer picnic for MIND - Methodists in New Directions - to the same purpose of building safe space and beloved community. It will be held next Saturday from 2 to 5 at the Park Slope UMC.

I know that Helen and I are already planning to attend and maybe we should find out if others would be interested in going to this special event.

Jayson Dobney, Coordinator of Worship and Music

Carlton Farewell

As we already know, Memorial is in a time of transition.  Now we must sadly say goodbye to another beloved member of our Memorial staff.  Carlton has announced that he will be leaving Memorial at the end of February to pursue his musical career and interests in the Berkshires. Please plan to come to Engage after worship on Sunday, February 28th to thank Carlton for his time at Memorial and the many musical gifts he has brought to our church over the years. A light lunch will be served and this will be a time to share with Carlton what his ministry has meant to all of us. If you would like to contribute to a monetary gift for Carlton, you can send or bring it to the church office or drop checks into the offering plate with "Carlton's fund" written in the memo. Please put cash in an envelope marked "Carlton's fund."  Please RSVP to Joan Meehan in the church office if you are coming for lunch. It will help us plan for the food. Thanks.   Ellen Baer Leeds, Staff Parish Relations Committee

S.O.S. S.O.S. S.O.S. S.O.S.

S.O.S – the universal call indicating distress.  Indicting the need for help.
Indicating that someone is in trouble.

Unfortunately, we are the ones in distress.  After five years of financial
Difficulties, events of the last year have pushed us into crisis.  With pledges decreased due to the economy, the loss of a key tenant and costs continuing to rise we are in a situation where we need $60,000 more by the end of the year, to cover our shortage. This is just to cover our obligations for this year.

We have created a new group: the Save Our Selves (S.O.S.) committee.  We know that it is God who saves us. We also know we have to do our part. This
committee has been assigned two key tasks:  come up with a solution for the
immediate problem and develop a three year financial plan.

Over the coming months you are going to hear a lot from the S.O.S. committee.  This problem is big and complex.  We are going to try many things to solve the problems.  The only way we will succeed is if everyone helps.

This is our distress call.  How will YOU help?

Join The Memorial Experience

A new Journey Group, the Memorial Experience, was birthed at our Church Conference in December. What is the Memorial Experience? It is the sum of many elements, with a balance of worship, fun, growth and service. The Journey Group chaired by Rob Pace has these goals:

1. Provide a consistent, positive and high quality experience to members, friends, visitors and recipients of MUMC's Outreach activities and giving.

2. Increase the number of members of MUMC by 30 families by the end of 2009.

3. Better coordinate the messages and activities of each of the elements (groups, building/facilities, internet/website, media, etc.) of MUMC in order to retain members, increase member participation and attract new members.

Please let Rob know, through the church office, of your interest in helping in this venture.
