Pastor's Paragraphs -- Joe Agne

This Sunday we focus in worship at 10 a.m. on the abundant life – what is it and why is it so elusive? The focus passage is Isaiah 55:1-9. The issue is appetite. Do we have appetites that can be satisfied and those that are never satisfied? Are there external forces that attempt to increase our appetites or even change them? The sermon title is “Abundant Life for All or No Abundance at All.” Can any of us claim abundance in our lives as long as there is anyone in the world without the basic necessities of life? Are the needs (as we understand them) of our lives such that everyone on earth could have the same needs and all of us could have these needs met and all of us could survive and thrive? These are some of the questions I am considering as I study a passage that begins:

Carlton Farewell

As we already know, Memorial is in a time of transition.  Now we must sadly say goodbye to another beloved member of our Memorial staff.  Carlton has announced that he will be leaving Memorial at the end of February to pursue his musical career and interests in the Berkshires. Please plan to come to Engage after worship on Sunday, February 28th to thank Carlton for his time at Memorial and the many musical gifts he has brought to our church over the years. A light lunch will be served and this will be a time to share with Carlton what his ministry has meant to all of us. If you would like to contribute to a monetary gift for Carlton, you can send or bring it to the church office or drop checks into the offering plate with "Carlton's fund" written in the memo. Please put cash in an envelope marked "Carlton's fund."  Please RSVP to Joan Meehan in the church office if you are coming for lunch. It will help us plan for the food. Thanks.   Ellen Baer Leeds, Staff Parish Relations Committee

Pastor Joe Retires in July

As most of you know, Joe and Dana recently purchased a home in Rollinsville, Colorado. Dana has moved out there and settled in and is already enjoying the first few of the many feet of snow she will see this winter. A couple of weeks ago Joe received the very good news that Dana had found a job. And not just any job, the perfect job. She started work this past week as general editor of a bi-monthly quilting magazine. Joe has just informed the Staff Parish Relations Committee that he will be retiring as of July 1st, 2010 and will move out to Colorado to join Dana.  We have been blessed to have had Joe as our pastor for 12 years and obviously this is a bittersweet announcement to have to make. Although we are happy for them both as they begin a new journey in their lives, we will miss them very much. The Staff Parish Relations Committee is committed to effecting a smooth transition, as is Joe, and we will begin this process early in the new year.

S.O.S. S.O.S. S.O.S. S.O.S.

S.O.S – the universal call indicating distress.  Indicting the need for help.
Indicating that someone is in trouble.

Unfortunately, we are the ones in distress.  After five years of financial
Difficulties, events of the last year have pushed us into crisis.  With pledges decreased due to the economy, the loss of a key tenant and costs continuing to rise we are in a situation where we need $60,000 more by the end of the year, to cover our shortage. This is just to cover our obligations for this year.

We have created a new group: the Save Our Selves (S.O.S.) committee.  We know that it is God who saves us. We also know we have to do our part. This
committee has been assigned two key tasks:  come up with a solution for the
immediate problem and develop a three year financial plan.

Over the coming months you are going to hear a lot from the S.O.S. committee.  This problem is big and complex.  We are going to try many things to solve the problems.  The only way we will succeed is if everyone helps.

This is our distress call.  How will YOU help?

Join The Memorial Experience

A new Journey Group, the Memorial Experience, was birthed at our Church Conference in December. What is the Memorial Experience? It is the sum of many elements, with a balance of worship, fun, growth and service. The Journey Group chaired by Rob Pace has these goals:

1. Provide a consistent, positive and high quality experience to members, friends, visitors and recipients of MUMC's Outreach activities and giving.

2. Increase the number of members of MUMC by 30 families by the end of 2009.

3. Better coordinate the messages and activities of each of the elements (groups, building/facilities, internet/website, media, etc.) of MUMC in order to retain members, increase member participation and attract new members.

Please let Rob know, through the church office, of your interest in helping in this venture.
